AND MORE ABOUT THE URBAN GYPSY…

This past year I can say without a doubt that I have grown in so many ways. Seeing the world has always fueled my zest for life, but like most people I have to work full time in order to pursue my passion. Life at home has a tendency to become mundane and with this monotony I feel like in the past I have not taken life by the balls and lived to my full potential. After returning from an amazing trip abroad I would always come home and slowly slip into a form of depression. That is why this year I said NO MORE! I am going to use that passion that I have for travel, tap into it, and ride that wave all year long. I am going to stretch my boundaries and comfort zones and pursue things that I once was too afraid to try. I am going to unleash my creativity and see where this will take me.

This is where The Urban Gypsy began. Sharing my experiences. Writing about my passions. And using my travels as inspiration for creating art, writing and photography.

This month I was honored to participate in my second ever craft market. Along with so many talented artisans I was able to showcase my work at the Curated Market.curated

At my booth I sold my art on canvas, Tshirts with my original art screen printed on them, enlarged photography from my travels, and mala jewelry. So much of what I make is directly inspired from what I see and the people I have met on my travels. To be able to share this with the market goers was truly a remarkable experience. Putting yourself out there and having your work be judged by others is incredibly nerve wracking. Being new to the art world I have never considered myself an ‘artist’. After my first market I felt like most of my sales were from friends. Even though I appreciate their support with all my heart, in the back of my mind I felt like they only bought my work because they felt obligated. But after this past Curated Market I had so many strangers talk to me and support me; which in turn has truly has helped build some confidence in myself and my work. I realize that if we don’t push ourselves out of comfort zones then we really deprive ourselves of becoming the best versions of who we are meant to become.

Mixed Media Art on Canvas

art3

I know that I am the happiest when I am traveling but unfortunately I need to make the big bucks (or small bucks) and can’t do this all year round. I have tried to make changes in my life over the last year to help make my life at home become a bit more fulfilling. I found that  upon my return from trips I would soon sink into a funk, so this year I was going to grab life by the balls and sail right past ‘Funk Island’. By doing so I have tried to tap into my creative side. This is where my art comes in…

Although I have been artistic most of my life, I am relatively new to the art world. My favorite forms of art are both mixed media and pen and ink. I love how mixed media can take the best qualities from all art forms by bringing in colour, texture, and real images into one piece. And on the opposite spectrum, I enjoy the simplicity of pen and ink.

Over the last six months I have been asked to create custom pieces as well as sell some of my art at local art/craft markets. Check out my pieces that I currently have for sale and if anything interests you, drop me a line.

Mala Necklaces & Bracelets

monk

Having seen MALA BEADS worn in many places around the world I have been inspired to create them as well. They were first introduced over 3000 years ago in India and have roots in Hinduism and Buddhism. The term ‘MALA’ is a Sanskrit work for ‘meditation garland’, and these beads were used for a special type of meditation where a mantra would be repeated 108 times.

Although I may not use my MALA for religious meditation, I truly believe that the beads are more than just an accessory. They encourage us to pause, breathe and realign ourselves with our deepest intentions. They motivate us to invest in moments of self-care and compassion. They are our physical, spiritual forget-me-nots.

My one-of-a-kind MALA necklaces are all made with semi-precious stones from around the world and I string the beads with 100% natural silk thread. Semi-precious stones have healing qualities and for thousands of years ancient civilizations have utilized the power from the stones and their energies.

Give a MALA as a gift to a loved one or for yourself as a physical reminder to manifest and achieve your goals. Payment is quick and easy through Paypal and I can have the beads shipped to your front door. Just sent me an email and you are a click away from owning a MALA yourself. (heathernhalpern@gmail.com)
